What does Alumni mean?

Information about the Alumni

What is an Alumni?

Alumnus or Alumna = former, or old boy, (plural Alumni) is of latin origin and referred in former times strictly speaking to boarding school inhabitants of a higher school, i.e. a so called Alumnats or Alumneums.
The term is used today for all former students of a university, with whom the university (the Alma Mater), wants to maintain a lifelong relationship.

UAS Erfurt would like to bring the theory and practice closer to each other. Therefore the ALUMNI interests refers not only to good relations with our former students alone, but also to the former instruction and further to employees of the UAS.

We want to win you over anyhow as friends and partners! However there are two sides to this: On one hand we want to support you with the care of your contacts to fellow students and friends and to bring you closer to the offers of the UAS. On the other hand we also need support from your part. Only with that can the Alumni and the UAS profit from the contacts and experiences.

Meaning and function for the faculties and the UAS

As has already clearly been shown and has worked satisfactorily, the emphasis of the Alumni work lies with the faculties. The cultural environment developed by the faculties with their specific graduation ceremonies, former student meetings, promotion associations etc. makes a positive contribution to this.

Nevertheless it requires overall co-ordination with combined UAS activities and when a kind of UAS identity is to be achieved. The faculties are therefore encouraged to designate Alumni spokespersons from their ranks. These are tasked, along with the Alumni of the UAS and with the chairpersons of the promotion associations with the consideration of how to further develop the decentralised work on one hand, and in addition how to make progress together.

As a result of past discussions with the heads of the university and the spokespersons of the faculties it has been decided to carry on as before, i.e. the factlies may extend and deepen their ALUMNI work in their proven way. The faculties are the actual “home port” for many graduates.

An Alumni bulletin serves to provide information at regular intervals on one hand about developments in the UAS and in the press. The faculties contribute on the other hand information from the departments via the Alumni spokespersons. This has been achieved by post until now, but faculties will also make their information available on the Internet in the future.
