Erfurt - the state capital of Thuringia
The UAS Erfurt is one of two universities in the Thuringia state capital of Erfurt.
Erfurt was mentioned in 742 for the first time in documents and developed shortly after its establishment into the centre of the Thuringia area, although it was not politically part of the state of Thuringia until 1944. With about 200,000 inhabitants today it is the largest city of Thuringia and a point of attraction for tourism and trade.
A varied cultural life for the young and old alike offers a pleasant change from school, study and work. Numerous events like the Krämerbrückenfest (shopkeeper bridge celebration) or the cathedral stage festivals infront of Erfurt cathedral draw thousands of visitors into the city year on year. Beside these events different clubs, discotheques and cultural organisations, and in addition, innumerable restaurants and cafés offer something for every taste. The student clubs Engelsburg and "uni-k.u.m" are aimed at students and offer a varied cultural program.
Erfurt possesses one of the best kept and largest medieval town centres in Germany. One of the most remarkable medieval buildings is the Krämerbrücke , the longest completely built and inhabited bridge in Europe. Beside the important scenes of world culture Erfurt has always been connected with a garden tradition. For example the Erfurt egapark displays unity and harmony with nature and architectural garden organization.
In Erfurt apart from the relaxation for the body and soul the sporting activities are a great asset. The Gunda Niemann Stirnemann Ice Arena is well known, or also the Steigerwald stadium, home of the FC Rot-Weis Erfurt football association. Beside which cycle racing and the track-and-field events have a long tradition.
