Institute
Four scientific organisations (institutes) have been created so far in two faculties to concentrate multi-disiplinary cooperation in research.
IBIT - INIT Bautronic Institute
The IBIT - INIT Bautronic Institute serves for the concentration and multidisciplinary cooperation in the applied research of the faculties of building engineering and computer science and the faculty of building and energy engineering. These goals serve for their own activities in research and science, concrete applications of research and knowledge transfer into practise.

Institute for urban research, planning and communication (ISP)
The ISP - Institute for urban research, planning and communication has an emphasis within the fields of urban planning, integrated urban development, urban-regional planning as well as communicative planning and process organisation. Their own activities in research and science, applications of research and knowledge transfer into practice are located in the centre. The institute has developed numerous research projects in recent years.

The Transport and Spatial Planning Institute
The Transport and Spatial Planning Institute was founded in the year 2003 as a scientific set up by the then faculty of traffic and transportation and confirmed in February 2004 by the Thüringia ministry for education and culture. Since the establishment of the institute Professor Dr. Matthias Gather has been director of the organisation. The institute serves application-specific , multidisciplinary scientific research as well as knowledge transfer into practice in the fields of transport and spatial planning.

proTUL Institute for production, transport, handling and storage
For the improvement of the practical teaching and as a basis for an internationally aligned research the Institute for production, transport, handling and storage was created in the year 2005. Here the professors of mechatronics and material flow systems, road vehicle technology and logistics are represented.
