Practical placements abroad

Why do a placement abroad?

To accomplish a placement course abroad on one hand means the extension of personal experience and on the other the deepening of your linguistic and specialist knowledge. You have the possibility of learning other cultures and to make new personal contacts.
Experiencing a new world will shape your personal development of sensitivity and tolerance in relation to strange cultures. Apart from the acquisition of intercultural comptence the chance is also there to win occupation-specific competence for the global job market.
It must be considered that the search for a practical placement involves a great deal of own initiative.

The choice of a practical placement can be very time-consuming, therefore you should begin as early as possible with planning (approx. 1 year in advance).

Here are some aspects which are important with the initial considerations:

  • Timing, country of residence
  • Knowledge of the language
  • Financing
  • Duration of the placement course

Paths to a placement abroad

In the Placement office of the respective faculty, addresses can be inquired from former trainees or with university professors with foreign experience. A search in the Internet should prove very effective.

At the beginning you should become informed about the cost of living of the destination country, in order to avoid expensive surprises. The Internet site of the German academic exchange service (Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD)) should serve as the first connection point for your own search for the financing possibilities of a foreign placement course. You will also find literature for the preparation of a foreign placement in the university library.
