Studying abroad

Tips for preparing to study abroad

Why study abroad?

On the one hand, studying abroad for one or two semesters can broaden and enhance your professional expertise and language skills, and on the other hand, it is an important personal experience.

It offers you the opportunity to get to know other cultures and gain intercultural experience, while encouraging cultural exchange and greater sensitivity towards foreign cultures.

Studying abroad is a chance to acquire job-specific skills for the global labour market.

The most important factor in making your stay abroad a success - and thus a valuable experience - is careful preparation, and this depends to a large extent on your own initiative. On no account should you allow yourself too little time to prepare: start planning at least a year before you intend to go abroad.

When is a good time for me to study abroad?

If you would like to complete part of your studies (one or two semesters) abroad, you should first start studying in Germany and only go abroad once you have gained a broad overview of your subject area. In this case, it is good to go abroad after completing your core modules. It is also possible to study abroad after graduating from a German university.

Where would I like to study?

You should think over what country and cultural area are of professional and personal interest to you. This also means: will I be able to understand lectures in the language of the country or will I have to improve my language skills beforehand? Will I pass the required language tests? You should find out more about the different types of university and how their degree courses are structured. In addition, it is important to know whether German university entrance qualifications are recognized abroad and whether the academic achievements obtained abroad will be recognized in Germany.

How will I fund my stay abroad?

You should never underestimate the costs of a stay abroad. Costs of living, travel expenses, tuition fees and additional health insurance are all to be considered.

If you search for "Auslandsstudium" (studying abroad) in the OPAC catalogue of the FH Erfurt's library, you will find literature about preparing for studying abroad.
