Digitalization in higher education – development, test and evaluation of media-based modules with E-learning methods

Digitalization as a part of a transformation that effects society as a whole influences formal and informal educational processes. Increasingly flexible and individual demands concerning to contemporary learning are changing the educational habits of students. Digital Tools can effectively connect knowledge transfer, self-efficacy and collaborative work to the achievement of module specific learning goals. Therewith universities and higher education institutions can strengthen their role as place for knowledge replication and are simultaneously building up competences for the active design of transformational processes. Within the project „Digitalization in higher education – development, test and evaluation of media-based modules with E-learning methods“ a new concept for higher education didactics promoting digital learning arrangements in the field of urban and spatial planning is going to be developed.

BMBF Research Project HeatResilientCity

Heat-resilient cities and district development. Residential-orientated knowledge generation and implementation in Dresden and Erfurt

Increasing heat stress is one of the most acknowledged and serious conse-quences of climate change in urban areas. The joint research project HeatResil-ientCity aims at developing and implementing innovative, socially fair, and adap-tive measures to reduce thermal stress both in buildings and in open spaces at district level. Selected neighbourhoods in the cities of Erfurt and Dresden serve as ‘living laboratories’. Here, preventive measures with regard to individual behaviour and construction are tested by means of knowledge transfer, participation, and physical implementation.

Research Questions

  • How can both the quality of life and attractiveness of urban districts be preserved and improved, seeing it from the residents’ perspective?
  • How can buildings be adjusted taking into account energy consumption and social acceptance?
  • How can urban spaces be preserved and improved for optimizing their potential ecosystem services, keeping cost restraints in mind?

Strategies and instruments for the integration of particularly disadvantaged population groups on the housing market as part of a sustainable transformation process of urban quarters - BMBF-research project StraInWo

Refugees and disadvantaged EU immigrants (e.g. Roma) are part of the current transition of the urban housing market. Especially in large cities, they compete on the housing market with other low income groups. Low income, lack of German language skills or stigmatisations impede their access to affordable housing. However, the successful social integration of refugees and immigrants is regarded as key factor for a sustainable and resilient development and transformation of neighborhoods.

The StraInWo research project aims to identify strategies and instruments for better integrating disadvantaged population groups into the housing market. Case studies focus on the integration of refugees (Lübeck) and Roma (Berlin). As a result of the project recommendations for a culture and escape sensible urban development will be deduced for municipalities, housing companies and stakeholders at federal and country level.

Share Economy - Models of sustainable consumption in the housing industry (KoSEWo)

The research project focuses on potentials and future trends of collaborative innovation processes in the housing industry in terms of sustainable consumption patterns in residential areas. This is related to current housing policy debates about more affordable housing. The contribution of models of sustainable consumption for low-income households will therefore be particularly examined. The main objectives of this research project are:

  • Collection and typification of existing models of sustainable, collaborative consumption in the housing industry
  • Determining and appraising the possible potential of a future implementation of sustainable consumption models in housing industry
  • Identifying opportunities, threats and effects of promoting collaborative consumption in housing industry
  • Identification of potentials and conflicts between models of collaborative consumption and the supply of affordable housing

Recommendations for housing industry shall be derived from the results of the research. Furthermore a preview of the future development of the treated topic shall be given.

DBU model project: Energy efficiency and housing industry - Testing of environmental communication concepts for an energy efficient behaviour of residents in existing housing complexes in Erfurt and Kassel

The housing industry being a contact point for residents and overall a possible cooperation partner, plays an important part to achieve climate change objectives on a local level. In addition to technological innovations, energy savings and an increase in energy efficiency, the energy behaviour of private households is one of the determining factors of climate change.

In collaboration with two housing companies, that are involved in the pilot project, methods of information an participation are being tested und further developed, with a view of contributing to an energy efficient behaviour of residents. As a result, successful strategies will be developed to enforce an energy efficient and sustainable behaviour as well as a significant improvement of the carbon footprint of the inhabitants/residents within the pilot quarters. Furthermore, recommendations in regards to communication processes and the development of climate change will be conducted for housing industry and city development.
