Allianz „Thüringer Becken“ - Intercommunal Future City 2030+

In the context of the “Science Year 2015”, the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) had proclaimed the nationwide competition “City of the Future”. As one of the competitors, the alliance “Thüringer Becken” (“Thuringian Valley”) was awarded to develop a holistic and sustainable “Intercommunal Vision 2030+”. The Institute for Urban Research, Planning and Communication (ISP) was in charge of scientific monitoring, technical advice and evaluation of the participation process. The project was managed by DSK – Deutsche Stadt- und Grundstücksentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (German Urban and Land Development Society)

The alliance “Thüringer Becken” hat been founded in 2014 and represents a cooperation of four communities in central Thuringia - Buttstädt, Kindelbrück, Sömmerda and Straußfurt. Their common aim is to strengthen intercommunal cooperation and to face current challenges. The basis for the intercommunal development is the close cooperation with the local residents and further local actors. In the context of the “City of the Future” the intercommunal vision included recommendations on the key issues of energy, traffic and transport were established by organising participation processes in all four municipalities. The method of “Future Conference” was chosen to manage a large-group-participation process. It had been applied in urban planning for visioning and setting up Integrated Urban Development Concepts (ISEK).
