Transport modelling / econometrics

Econometrics is a branch of economic science. In transport econometrics, one investigates the quantitative side of transport economics as well as their determining processes, as well as develops and tests related models. As an example one could mention the extent of the demand for traffic and transportation services, in dependence of its regional and national determinants or – in reverse – the regional-economical effects of transport activities.

Based on appropriate data and estimation processes, mathematic coherencies are created, which help to explain existing observation data and to pronounce forecasts. As the core of transport models, econometric formulas compact the empiric foundations and often determine decisions e.g. within infrastructural planning. The basis-data is the transport matrix. One differentiates between aggregated models, which produce a rather sweeping picture of the parameters, and disaggregated models, which emerge through the analysis of individual data or household panels.
