Demographic change and public supply

Demographic change and its consequences, loss in population and shrinking regions, less young, but more old citizens – these and other key words determine the discussion about the perspectives of many regions.

For good or ill: The population in Germany will become lesser and at the same time older within the next decades – this has multiple effects on society.

The change happens not only in rural areas lacking in infrastructure – although the effects of demographic change become specifically apparent there – but also the cities and their suburbs have to face the changes. Major focus within the activities of the Transport and Spatial Planning Institute lies in the display and the analysis of these changes. This means that e.g. spatial disparities (shrinking and growing regions) are determined and reasons and consequences are evaluated on all planning levels. In the center of attention are the questions of spatial organising and planning as well as the resulting effects on mobility and transport.

A major aspect that comes along with the demographic change refers to the possibilities to keep up area-wide social and technological infrastructure: How can public supply be guaranteed for everybody even if regions are shrinking and public financing is on the decline? The Transport and Spatial Planning Institute tries to answer this question especially in the fields of accessibility and provision of public mobility services. Amongst other activities, network relations are determined, fields of supply are pointed out and mobility concepts are developed that not only include scheduled transport services, alternative services as well as individual mobility supplies, but most of all focus on the demands of the customer.
