Regional freight transport conference (Werrabahn) on May 9th of 2007 in Bad Salzungen

The rail freight transport in Germany has been on an unexpected rise for a few years now. Reasons for this phenomenon are the increasing international trade, the high costs for transport and gasoline in the motorised freight transport, but also optimised offers of the railway transport companies.

There can be seen beginnings of a re-rise of the regional rail freight transport in Thuringia as well. Observing the line between Bad Salzungen – Meiningen – Hildeburghausen –Sonneberg (Werrabahn) this rise becomes specifically apparent.

The Transport and Spatial Planning Institute has worked on the project “potentials in freight transport on railways as a contribution to the preservation of the railway network in the region for the regional public transport” and will present the results within the transport conference. There, one wants to demonstrate the potentials of rail freight transport for the regional industry; discuss lead examples of successful offers and develop concepts for an increased use of rail for freight transport. Further presentations and workshops shall set off discussions about the different fields of activity. Within this event we address experts and interested citizens from the region.
