Training goal

The natural sciences play an increasingly important and indispensable role in restoration. In addition to a good knowledge of the materials and substances to be used, it is essential for the budding restorer to also acquire knowledge of their reaction mechanisms, mutual behavior, climatic and environmental dependencies, the possibility of substitution and modification, or signs of aging.

This broad range includes the scientific evaluation of historical production technologies and planned conservation and restoration processes.

The various sub-disciplines interlock in a very complex way, regardless of the specific questions facing the natural scientist, e.g. regarding the cleaning and strengthening of paint layers or the assessment of damage caused by biological infestation or regarding the most appropriate sampling for material analysis.

The education of the students in the natural sciences is differentiated in the BA and MA studies. While the former mainly teaches the basics, the latter mainly focuses on practical investigative tasks, which the students should solve largely independently.

Master degree

The examination tasks in the MA usually have a higher degree of difficulty and greater complexity than in the basic study.

Great importance is attached to the collaboration between the restorer and the natural scientist. This is the only way to achieve optimal results in the interests of the works of art. The arduous scientific activity in identifying unknown materials is rewarded, above all, by enjoying the results obtained.

The increased skills of the higher semesters in solving tasks are also shown in the scientific approach to these. Last but not least, the mostly good results of the students when completing the scientific papers on an individually selected topic in the 7th - 10th semester speak for this.

The critical examination of scientific problems and their solution is an essential criterion when working out a successful restoration concept. The largely independent performance of this difficult task during the BA and MA thesis represents the highlight of the scientific training during the course.
