Leaves of Absence

In order to be eligible for a leave of absence, the following criteria, among others, must be met in accordance with §11 of the Enrolment Regulations (ImmO) of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt:

Students who cannot devote at least half of their working hours to their studies for good cause can be exempted from their studies upon written application (leave of absence). Leave of absence must be applied for within the re-enrolment period for the following semester. It is not possible to retroactively apply for a leave of absence for a completed semester.

Leaves of absence are granted for one semester and, as a rule, can be extended to a total of two semesters during a degree program. Periods of maternity and parental leave do not count towards the period pursuant to sentence 1.

As a rule, the following constitute good cause for a leave of absence

  • taking maternity or parental leave,
  • illness which precludes proper study
  • working on the committees of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt, student representation or on the administrative board of Student Services, which involves a considerable time commitment
  • a study-related stay abroad, unless it is a work placement provided for in the Academic Regulations
  • caring for a relative

The request is to be substantiated in writing and supported by appropriate documentation. The application must be accompanied by proof that the reason for the leave of absence exists.

Semesters of leave do not count as semesters of study. Coursework submissions, examinations and academic theses (Bachelor's, Master's and diploma theses, including colloquium) are not permitted during a leave of absence.
