Diverseness as opportunity

The University of Applied Sciences Erfurt was one of the first to sign up to the "Charter of Diversity". The Charter of Diversity is an initiative under the patronage of Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel aimed at promoting diversity mainly in business, but also in public institutions. Only a few higher-education institutions have been among the signatories until now - including UAS Erfurt.

The university recognises first and foremost the opportunities and benefits arising from the diversity of human co-existence, in teaching, learning and working, for society and, in a real way, for this university. Universities should always be places that foster a climate of diversity. Only in such an environment can academic teaching and research thrive. Even in the specialised context of UAS Erfurt broad diversity can be found. Bringing together under one roof different perceptions and mindsets shaped in traditional and new faculty cultures is a challenge faced by the university on a daily basis.

Moreover each and every student and staff member, irrespective of gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, disability, age, sexual orientation or identity, should enjoy respect, appreciation and integration within the culture of teaching and research - this is precisely what UAS Erfurt has signed up to.

Wording of the Charter of Diversity

Economic life in Germany is marked by the diversity of modern society, influenced by globalisation and demographic change. We can only enjoy economic prosperity by recognising and using existing diversity. This means the diversity of our workforce and the various needs of our customers and business partners. The diversity of employees with a variety of skills and talents opens up opportunities for innovative and creative solutions.

The purpose of implementing the "Charter of Diversity" in our organisation is to create a working environment free of prejudice. All members of staff should be esteemed - irrespective of gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity. The recognition and encouragement of this diverse potential brings economic benefits for our organisation.

We create a climate of acceptance and mutual trust. This has a positive impact on our reputation with business partners and consumers in Germany and in countries throughout the world.
Within the framework of this Charter we will

  1. foster a corporate culture marked by mutual respect and appreciation. We will create the necessary conditions for managers and employees to recognise, share and live out these values. This demands a particular commitment on the part of managers and supervisors.
  2. review our personnel procedures to ensure that they do justice to the diverse abilities and talents of all employees and to our expectations of performance.
  3. recognise the diversity of society inside and outside the organisation, value the potential contained within and use it to the benefit of the organisation.
  4. make the implementation of the Charter the subject of internal and external dialogue.
  5. inform the public annually about our activities and the progress towards the promotion of diversity and recognition.
  6. inform our employees about diversity and include them in the implementation of the Charter.

We are in no doubt: that experiencing and appreciating diversity has a positive impact on society in Germany.
