Questions and Answers
-
A counselling session usually lasts around 60 minutes. We begin the session by clarifying why you requested psychosocial support. We discuss what is troubling you and what has led you to seek counselling. We also look at possible goals, previous attempts to find solutions, and any previous counselling or therapy experiences you may have had. Together, we then decide whether further sessions would be helpful.
-
No. The counselling sessions and everything discussed remain strictly confidential. Without your explicit consent, no one will be informed that you have attended counselling.
-
Simply feeling that talking to someone could be helpful is a sufficient reason to come to counselling. Counselling is not about deciding whether your concerns are “serious enough” to justify an appointment. It is always a good idea to seek support early and consider how high levels of stress or distress can be prevented.
-
Psychosocial counselling offers preventive, resource-oriented and solution-focused counselling to help students strengthen their personal resources and develop individual strategies for dealing with their concerns. Psychosocial counselling does not provide diagnostic services or psychotherapy and cannot replace necessary psychotherapeutic treatment.

Since it can be very difficult to find a therapy place by contacting individual practices directly, it may be easier to arrange an appointment through the patient service of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung). You can find out about available appointments online or by telephone (116117). Since there are only a limited number of appointments available, you may need to contact the patient service several times before you are able to book an appointment. Unfortunately, an initial appointment with a therapist does not guarantee a long-term place in therapy.
In Erfurt, in addition to private psychotherapeutic practices, you can also enquire about therapy at the outpatient clinics of the Academy for Psychotherapy Erfurt or of the Health and Medical University Erfurt.
You can also contact a psychotherapy practice directly by telephone to request an initial appointment. Practices have designated telephone consultation hours during which they can be reached. During these hours, you can arrange an initial consultation. You do not need a referral from your general doctor for this.
You can find psychotherapists through the therapist search provided by Pro Psychotherapie e.V. or through the search function of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung).

Yes. If you believe that someone needs help or if you are personally struggling with the psychological problems of someone close to you, you are welcome to come to counselling. We can discuss how to proceed and, if necessary, identify other appropriate support services.
Outside of consultation hours and in acute crises or emergencies, please do not hesitate to contact the Social Psychiatric Service (Sozialpsychiatrischer Dienst) (Erfurt: 0361 655 4248). Further support is available from the organisation Relatives and Friends of People with Mental Illness in Erfurt and the Surrounding Area (Verein Angehörige und Freunde psychisch Kranker Erfurt & Umgebung).
