Department of Urban and Spatial Planning

Urban and Spatial Planning deals with the diverse needs of society for the built and unbuilt environment and the resulting conflicts of use and opportunities for action, including in the fields of residential development, the economy, leisure and recreation, mobility, nature conservation and social and technical infrastructure.

Urban and spatial planners endeavour to reconcile conflicting demands on space, avoid conflicts and initiate, support and coordinate planning processes. For this purpose, they draft municipal or regional development concepts and strategies and oversee their implementation. Other areas in which they can work include professional associations, non-governmental organizations or academic and research institutions. Teamwork, flexibility and project and process-oriented approaches are key competences that Urban and Spatial Planning graduates bring to the workplace.
